Montana Medicaid & Student Insurance
The Curry Health Center will never turn a student away — we’re here to help.
However, we are not a Montana Medicaid Passport Provider, which means:
- Montana Medicaid will not cover or reimburse for services you receive at Curry Health Center.
- Any charges from Curry Health Center will be billed to your student account, and you are responsible for paying them.
Already on Montana Medicaid?
If you're enrolled in Montana Medicaid when you register for classes, you’re not required to purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).
BUT:
To keep your Medicaid coverage, you are required to apply for the Health Insurance Premium Payment (HIPP) Program if you meet the criteria.
Failure to comply with a Medicaid directive could result in the cancellation of medical coverage for all adults in the household.
What is the HIPP Program?
HIPP is a Medicaid program that uses government funds to pay for other health insurance plans, like SHIP, if they determine it’s cost-effective.
If approved
- You’ll still keep your Medicaid coverage
- You’ll get extra insurance (dual coverage)
- This can help you access more services, providers, and care options
How to Apply for HIPP
You must be a current Montana Medicaid client. To request the application and instructions please fill out .

Out-of-State Medicaid
If you’re on Medicaid from a different state as a dependent on the plan (i.e. parent is primary):
- Your coverage does meet UM’s insurance requirement
- It won’t work for regular care in Montana
- It only covers emergencies/ER visits
If you’re on Medicaid from a different state and are not a dependent on the plan:
- Your coverage does not meet UM’s insurance requirement
- You will have to find another insurance option
