Health insurance can feel confusing. We’re here to make it easier. All UM students are required to have active health insurance while enrolled, and this page will help you understand the basics, important deadlines, and how to find the information you need across our insurance website.

Using Health Insurance at CHC Medical

Curry Health Center’s Medical Clinic now accepts health insurance for services. Using your insurance directly at CHC Medical makes it easier to manage costs while receiving trusted on-campus care.

Please Note: Information on this page is updated regularly.

Preparing for Your Visit

Ensure you have active health insurance through one of these options:

• Parent/guardian’s plan
• Employer plan
• Private insurance plan
• AcademicBlue / SHIP (UM’s Student Health Insurance Plan)

Before your appointment:

• Upload your insurance card(s) to the or bring your card to your visit.
  • Important: if you're a dependent on a parent/guardian's insurance plan, they are the 'Policy Holder' and you will need to submit their name, date of birth, etc. to the Patient Portal when prompted.
• Confirm with your insurance carrier:
  • CHC Medical is in-network for your plan.
  • Coverage for the type of visit (primary care, specialty care, etc.).
  • Out-of-network benefits, if applicable.

Insurance Plans Currently Accepted at CHC Medical

CHC Medical is currently contracting with the following carriers:

• Allegiance Provider Direct, LLC (includes Cigna Medical)

• First Choice Health Network

• Mountain Health Co-op

• PacificSource

• Blue Cross Blue Shield

• AcademicBlue / SHIP (UM’s Student Health Insurance Plan)

• Tricare

• TriWest

• United Healthcare

This list will continue to be updated as agreements are finalized.

Students with Medicaid

• CHC is not yet a Montana Medicaid Passport Provider (expected Fall 2026). Montana Medicaid will not cover or reimburse services at CHC Medical until contracting is finalized.

• Students are responsible for charges through the (see Billing and Financial Support).

• Sliding fee scales and the Curry Cares Fund (hardship fund) are available for students with financial need (see Billing and Financial Support).

Tip: If you’re already on Montana Medicaid, you are not required to purchase SHIP, but we strongly encourage applying for the HIPP program to maximize your coverage!

Need Health Insurance?

• SHIP (Student Health Insurance Plan) offers Gold-level or better coverage at a student-friendly price for Montana University System students.

Important Notes

• You must make any insurance changes before the 15th class day each semester.
• Selecting SHIP when making your Insurance Selection does not activate immediate insurance coverage, your plan starts once you complete semester registration and pay/finalize your tuition bill.

How to Change your Insurance Selection

Insurance changes cannot be made in GrizPortal. 

Visit the ‘Change Student Insurance Election’ page for step-by-step instructions for both before and after the 15th class day.

Note for students taking 1-5 credits:

SHIP is only available to students taking 6+ credits. If you previously had SHIP coverage and are now taking between 1 and 5 credits, you may be able to continue it. Contact studentinsurance@mso.umt.edu for more information or to submit a petition.
