Student Insurance Support Starts Here!
We know health insurance can be confusing and expensive — but it’s important and required while you're a student at the 91次元. We’re here to help make it easier.
What you need to know:
- All students must have health insurance while attending UM.
- You can either purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), called AcademicBlue, or use/obtain your own.
- International students may have extra steps — talk to your sponsor for details.
- This rule is here to protect you, so you can get the care you need and stay focused on school.
Deadlines & Important Info:
- You must make any insurance changes by the 15th day of classes each semester.
- Choosing SHIP during registration doesn’t activate your coverage immediately — your plan begins after you’ve completed school registration and finalized your tuition bill. However, coverage is retroactive to the start of the term, and you can submit eligible expenses for reimbursement once your plan is active.
- Because of privacy laws (HIPAA), we can only talk to you about your insurance — not your parents — unless you’ve given written permission by submitting a Release of Information (ROI) form.
Plan Ahead for 2026:
Starting January 1, 2026,
Curry Health Center’s medical clinic will begin billing health insurance for services. Currently, students pay the health services fee and out-of-pocket costs set by CHC, with no insurance billing — everyone pays the same amount for services. Beginning Spring 2026, students will need to either use insurance or pay out of pocket at rates determined by their coverage. Make sure you're prepared with a plan through a parent, employer, private provider, or AcademicBlue (SHIP). Please plan ahead and reach out to contactcurry@mso.umt.edu with questions.
If you need assistance with obtaining the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), contact us at studentinsurance@mso.umt.edu or 406-243-2844.
Need to switch your insurance choice?
You can't do it through GrizPortal. Instead, follow the instructions under ‘Change Student Insurance Election’ in the menu on the left.
Taking 6+ credits and paying the health service fee?
You’re required to have health insurance. You can meet this requirement in a few ways — by enrolling in the AcademicBlue Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), staying on a parent or guardian’s plan, or using insurance through your employer, or obtaining a private plan.
Are you enrolled in 1–5 credits and previously had SHIP coverage? If so, you may be eligible to retain your plan.
To learn more and submit a petition, contact Dawn Camara-Clark (contact information below).
If you’re interested in SHIP, you can learn more in the ‘Student Health Insurance Plan’ section on the left.
