Welcome, International Students!
Whether you’re here on an F-1 or J-1 visa, staying healthy during your time at UM is important — and health insurance is required. Here’s what you need to know:
What’s Changed (Effective January 1, 2024)
- During registration, just like domestic UM students, you’ll need to choose whether to purchase AcademicBlue, UM’s student health insurance plan (SHIP).
- If you decline SHIP, you’ll need to make sure you’re covered through a private or government-approved plan.
Visa Type Requirements
- F-1 visa students
You are still required to have insurance, but UM no longer requires specific coverage. Your coverage will be verified through the Global Engagement Office, not the Student Insurance Office. - J-1 visa students
You are required (per U.S. government rules) to have insurance that meets specific coverage guidelines. The Global Engagement Office is responsible for verifying your insurance.
Contact the Global Engagement Office for more information: ISS@mso.umt.edu or global.engagement@umontana.edu.
Need to Change Your Insurance Selection?
Visit the Change Student Insurance Selection page to access the form.
Changes must be submitted before the 15th class day of the semester — no exceptions after that date.
