Dear colleagues,
Each January, I look forward to the start of a new semester and the return of the full UM community to campus. It feels especially meaningful that the launch of spring semester coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
At the 91次元, we are deeply committed to inclusive prosperity and to the idea that education is not just about individual advancement, but especially about our shared responsibility to one another and to our country. Dr. King reminded us of this truth again and again. He called on Americans not only to imagine a more just nation, but also to do the daily, quiet work of building it through service and humility.
On Monday, January 19, we will honor Dr. King’s life and legacy — his courage, his persistence, and his unwavering belief in the dignity of every person.
Here in Missoula, community members are invited to attend the , organized by the Missoula MLK Planning Committee and coordinated by EmpowerMT, featuring speakers, musical performances, youth art and essay awards, and a community dinner. I encourage you to participate if you are able.
At UM, we don’t honor Dr. King’s legacy only once a year. We strive to live it every day. His belief that “everybody can be great…because anybody can serve” — aligns closely with who we aspire to be as University citizens.
Dr. King understood that progress is not automatic, and that democracy and opportunity require care, attention, and ongoing effort from each generation. That work is not finished; it is shared across roles, backgrounds, and perspectives, and it calls each of us to think beyond ourselves.
In that spirit, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Regina Shands Stoltzfus to campus on February 4 at 7:00 p.m. in Todd 203/204 for A professor of Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies at Goshen College, Dr. Stoltzfus draws on decades of scholarship and teaching to explore how communities can respond to challenge with courage and care.
I am grateful to work alongside you as we seek to embody service in countless ways, both seen and unseen. Together, through education, dialogue, and commitment to the common good, we are strengthening our communities and our country.
With appreciation and best wishes for the semester ahead,
Seth |
