Step-by-step guide to request approved accommodations
Once your accommodations are approved by ODE, you must contact your professor so your professor can explain how the accommodations will be implemented in the course. Follow this guide below to navigate the process.
If you are a student at the Alexander Blewett III School of Law, follow the law school’s specific process, which differs from the instructions on this page.
Step 1: Review the course syllabi
Start by carefully reading each course syllabus. This will helps you identify which accommodations are relevant to your courses.
For example, you may need extended test time for timed exams but not for group projects.
Step 2: Submit a Semester Request via the ODE portal
After reviewing the syllabi:
- Log into the
- Submit a Semester Request to choose the accommodations relevant to your courses. This allows you to customize your accommodation letter and send it directly to your professor through the portal (follow the Semester Request instructions).
This step officially notifies your professors of your approved accommodations.
Step 3: Follow up with faculty
Once your accommodation letters are sent:
- Email your professors to request a meeting or conversation (view Email samples). Use a clear subject line such as “Accommodation Discussion Request.”
- In your email, briefly introduce yourself and mention that your accommodation letter has been sent through the ODE portal.
This proactive approach demonstrates initiative and helps build a collaborative relationship with your faculty.
Step 4: Discuss arrangements with faculty
During your meeting or conversation:
- Clarify how each accommodation will be implemented in the course context.
- Ask questions if you’re unsure any details, such as how extended time will be handled for pop quizzes.
- Understand your responsibilities (e.g., notifying the professor within 24 hours of an absence) and what the professor is responsible for.
This ensures everyone is on the same page and helps prevent misunderstandings later.
Step 5: Stay in touch with ODE
Even after your accommodations are in place:
- Reach out to your access consultant if something isn’t working or if new challenges arise.
- Don't hesitate to communicate early; addressing small issues promptly can help prevent them from escalating.
Remember, ODE supports you throughout the semester, not just at the beginning.
