Using Tax Credits for Higher Education
Enacted by in 1997, the Taxpayer Relief Act created two tax benefits for families who are paying for higher education. There are also benefits for people who are repaying student loans. Whether you may take advantage of the tax credits depends on your individual facts and circumstances.
You will need to contact your tax consultant or the Internal Revenue Service at (800) 829-1040 to determine if you are eligible for the tax credits. Instructions accompanying your federal tax forms will explain how to calculate the credit and how to claim it on your tax return.
Receiving Your 1098-T Form
1098-T Forms are generated annually on or before Jan. 31. A student will not receive a 1098-T for the tax year if scholarships and grants exceed the qualified tuition charges or when all amounts are zero.
Student 1098-T tuition statements are available in GrizPortal. Follow the instructions below to access the 1098-T tuition statement:
- Open Student Dashboard
- Under Student Account & Billing, click on "1098T Tax Form"
- Enter the tax year and click on the “Submit” button
- Once you have submitted, the tax year the information is displayed for you
