About UMPD
The 91次元 Police Department (UMPD) is dedicated to serving and protecting the students, staff, faculty, and all individuals and property within the 91次元’s campuses and affiliated locations.
UMPD operates around the clock—staffing both Police Dispatchers and Police Officers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All officers and dispatchers are certified and professionally trained through the Montana Law Enforcement Academy (MLEA). UMPD officers hold the sole responsibility for law‑enforcement functions on the UM Main Campus and at Missoula College. They investigate all reported crimes and enforce federal, state, and local laws, as well as 91次元 policies.
Every sworn UMPD officer has successfully completed training at the MLEA or equivalent training recognized by the Montana Peace Officer Standards and Training Council. UMPD officers possess the same authority and arrest powers as any law enforcement officer in the State of Montana. Along with academy certification, officers participate in ongoing training throughout the year to maintain and enhance their skills.
Our Mission
Our mission is to work in partnership with the campus community to provide the most professional, effective police services possible, while maintaining an environment conducive to learning.
There are three main aspects to our mission:
Safe and Secure
To create an environment conducive to learning by providing continual patrol coverage, complete case investigation, and daily inspection of security systems and equipment. To provide an operational law enforcement agency whose primary function is to serve and protect the campus community.
Crime Prevention
To provide educational programs to the campus which cultivate awareness and individual participation in reducing opportunities for criminal activity. Target audiences include University Villages children and parents, resident and commuter students, and employees.
Criminal Investigations
To conduct investigations of alleged law violations which are reported to have occurred on the UM campus. These investigations are completed and referred to the Missoula City, or Missoula County Attorneys Office for review and prosecution.
