A Legacy of Patriotic Statesmanship
Founded by an Act of Congress in 1983, the Mansfield Center fosters globally minded leaders of integrity. We are the sole Rural West nonpartisan institution supporting youth and communities through civic and international education guided by the Mansfield Legacy of ethical leadership, civic responsibility, respect for the U.S. Constitution, and an unconditional commitment to the public good.
An inspiration to rural youth, Mike Mansfield rose from a troubled childhood, service in three branches of the military, and working Montana’s copper mines to become our nation’s longest-serving Senate Majority Leader and longest-serving Ambassador to Japan. Mansfield was distinguished by his approach to statesmanship at a time of rapid sociopolitical change and deep domestic divides marked by war, assassinations, and riots. Like America’s founders, Mansfield understood that maintaining democracy and global allies is an ongoing challenge. Maureen Mansfield was essential to this story: Mike credited Maureen as an integral part of his success, stating, "What we have done, we have done together.
