Awards
The UM Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR), the Office of Undergraduate Research, and sponsoring units recognize remarkable performances and presentations. Projects are eligible to receive an award based on a student's project category and the award criteria. To be eligible for awards consideration, students must submit an abstract or artist's statement and present or perform at UMCUR.
UMCUR will present awards to the top presentations and performances from each of the five project categories (Humanities, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Visual and Performing Arts). New in 2026 are the additional award categories of Engaged Scholarship and Interdisciplinary Studies. To be considered for an award, students must select the appropriate awards box in ScholarWorks when registering by the February 20th. For students interested in awards consideration, several committees, composed of faculty and staff members, will review abstract and artist's statement submissions to determine finalists from each project category. The authors of those top abstract and artist's statement submissions will then have their performances and presentations reviewed during the conference, using an evaluation rubric.
Awards List
- UMCUR Conference Awards: Awards will be presented to the top projects in each of the five project categories (Humanities, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Visual and Performing Arts), as well as in the categories of Engaged Scholarship and Interdisciplinary Studies.
- Performances and presentations will be evaluated using the UMCUR rubric.
- As one part of the Visual and Performing Arts category listed above, the OPUS Literary Arts Award recognizes creative writing projects (nonfiction, fiction, and poetry).
- A monetary prize accompanies these awards.
- Sponsors:
- Office of Undergraduate Research
- Creative Writing Program and Fall Writers’ Opus (OPUS Literary Arts Award)
- The Franke Global Leadership Initiative (GLI) will manage the awards process for GLI fellows and their capstone mentors. The GLI will present an award to the top capstone team oral presentation, using the GLI Rubric.
