We Value Community Engagement!
UMPT values community engagement, outreach, and service and have integrated this value within our program. Our first-year clinical introductory course requires community outreach, for example. In addition, our students have the ability to participate in student-led volunteer efforts or elective courses that help address social health determinants with community service activities. Engaging in community outreach and service helps our students gain valuable skills and a broader understanding of community needs and challenges. These types of activities also promote professional and personal growth and strengthen relationships with communities and individuals alike.

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk
Our students have had a wonderful opportunity with faculty member Dr. Caitlin Zondlo, to volunteer as medical crew at the Susan G. Komen 3-day breast cancer walk. Students learned hands-on in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. The event in San Diego, CA typically has around 1500 participants who have committed to fundraising money for the fight to find a cure for breast cancer. Students were immersed in a community of individuals who are survivors, fighters, or supporters of breast cancer. As medical crew, they provided approximately 20 hours of probono physical therapy services. The event enhanced their patient communication skills and also allowed for organic interprofessional experience as they practiced with athletic trainers, nurses, chiropractors, massage therapists, and physicians.
We also want to give a huge thanks to the Experiential Learning Faculty Support Fund through the UM through the UM Experiential Learning and Career Ssuccess (ELCS) for helping to make this trip possible!
