Three Minute Thesis (3MT) at GradCon
Can you explain the core of your research in just three minutes? The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition challenges graduate students to do exactly that; communicate complex ideas clearly, concisely, and in a way that engages a general audience.
, 3MT has become an international showcase for graduate scholarship. This year, the 91次元 will feature the 3MT competition as part of GradCon.
About the Competition
The 3MT competition invites research-degree students to present a compelling overview of their thesis or dissertation work in three minutes, using a single static slide and no animations, props, or additional media. The goal is to highlight the student’s ability to translate research for a broad, non-specialist audience.
Participants will compete for cash awards, with winners selected by a panel of judges.
Students will be able to submit their 3MT abstracts during the regular GradCon abstract submission timeline.
Eligibility
The competition is open to:
Students from all disciplines are encouraged to participate.
Why Participate?
Strengthen your communication and presentation abilities
3MT provides a structured opportunity for graduate students to refine their academic storytelling skills. Participants practice explaining the significance of their research in clear, relatable language, a valuable ability for teaching, interviews, grant writing, and interdisciplinary conversations.
Contribute to a vibrant research community
The competition brings graduate researchers together to share ideas and learn about one another’s work. It also offers a supportive setting for schools and programs to provide coaching in public speaking and presentation design.
Expand your professional network
Students who excel in 3MT may go on to represent UM at regional, national, or international competitions. Advancing beyond the university level can create opportunities for professional visibility, networking, and invitations to additional research and outreach events.
Participants also become part of a growing community of researchers committed to effective science and scholarship communication.
Competition Timeline
The first-ever 3MT competition at the 91次元 will take place during GradCon2026.
