Deferred Admission Procedure
Newly admitted graduate students who are unable to begin their program in the term of admission may request a deferral of admission for either one semester or one year.
Student Procedure
-
Students must contact their academic department to request a deferral of admission. The request must specify:
- the term of intended return.
- A reason for the deferral is preferred but not required.
Approval of deferral requests is at the discretion of the department.
-
Deferral requests must be submitted prior to the 15th instructional day of the student’s first semester. Students who are registered for coursework must also submit a semester withdrawal at the time the deferral request is made.
-
International students who have been issued an I-20 and wish to defer admission must submit the deferral request before the first day of the semester to avoid cancellation of the I-20.
To receive an updated I-20 for the deferred term, students must submit:
- Updated financial documentation
- An Application for Readmission
Students should be aware that cost of attendance figures may change during the deferral period. Proof of financial support must reflect the cost of attendance in effect at the time of readmission.
-
If a deferral request is not submitted by the 15th instructional day and the student remains registered, the student must submit a Leave of Absence request instead of a deferral.
-
If the deferral request is denied or if the student fails to register, the student must fully reapply for admission to return in a future term.
-
To reactivate admission for the approved deferred term, students must submit an Application for Readmission and pay the readmission fee. Students will not be eligible to register for coursework until the readmission has been reviewed by the department and processed.
