Graduation Requirements: Writing Courses
To graduate, students must complete specific writing courses that fulfill both general education and discipline-specific requirements. These include:
- Introductory Writing Course
- A Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Course

Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Courses
Course Requirements
In a Writing Across the Curriculum course, at least 50% of the course grade must be based on student performance on formal and informal writing assignments. Writing should be used as a tool for learning and communication and tailored to the content and goals of the course.听
Understanding Assignments
- Formal Writing Assignments are typically longer, revised works such as essays, reports, or research papers that are evaluated for structure, clarity, and content.听
- Informal Writing Assignments may include journals, discussion posts, or in-class reflections and are usually un-graded or graded for completion and thoughtfulness.听
Class Size Recommendations
Enrollment should be capped at 25 students per instructor or grader to allow for meaningful engagement with student writing.听
Writing in the Disciplines (WID) Courses听
Course Requirements听
- At least 50% of the course grade must come from writing assignments.听
- Students must individually compose at least 20 pages of assessed writing over the term. This can be distributed across multiple assignments.听
- The requirement may be met through multiple courses as long as the outcomes are met and page count is maintained.听
- Group assignments can count towards the requirement only if each student's contribution is clearly identifiable.听
Course Delivery & Enrollment听
- A formal Writing in the Disciplines course is not required, but the learning outcomes must still be met.
- Enrollment should be limited to 25 students per instructor.听
