Writing Groups for Graduate Students
Come write with us! Community, accountability, and setting achievable goals can help sustain progress on major writing projects. We host weekly writing groups throughout the academic year, including summer session. Writing groups help you maximize writing productivity through structured writing time, connecting with other writers, generating momentum and reaching writing goals.
At each session, a Writing Center staff member invites participants to briefly share writing goals before a focused work period. At the end of each session, the group reconvenes to briefly share successes or challenges, and articulate next steps.
Fall Semester Drop-in Writing Groups
The Writing Center hosts to provide structure and support for graduate students working on long-term projects. Groups meet in person in the Writing Center (Mansfield Library, Room 322) or online via zoom. Students are welcome to attend one or both weekly sessions. Come as often as you can and stay as long as you are able!
; September 2 - December 10
Sessions begin promptly with a brief check-in to set goals for the writing period followed by individual writing time. The session concludes with a chance to reflect briefly on progress made and identify goals for your next writing session. A graduate writing specialist facilitates each group. is encouraged but drop-ins are welcome!
A Note on Writing Groups
Different types of writing groups serve different purposes, and we encourage students to explore alternate formats and to initiate additional writing groups to best meet their individual needs. These can include groups focused on providing peer feedback and support, which differ from accountability groups that emphasize protected and scheduled writing time.
Interested in setting up your own writing group? Feel free to reach out to us to discuss ways to do so, or check out the University of North Carolina’s or George Mason University’s .
