Volunteer with Us at the Shania Twain Concert
Help Make It a Zero Waste Event!
The Office of Sustainability is seeking volunteers to join our Zero Waste team at the upcoming Shania Twain concert on Tuesday, July 2nd at 7:00 PM in Grizzly Stadium. Opening acts include Kip Moore and Lindsay Ell. Volunteers will get to enjoy parts of the show while playing a vital role in making this large-scale event as sustainable as possible!
What You’ll Do:
We’ll follow the same successful model used at previous concerts and football games at Griz Stadium. Volunteers will help concertgoers correctly sort their waste at our three-stream stations -landfill, recycling (plastics and cans), and compost (mostly food packaging)- and help keep contamination low. We’ll provide everything you need: gloves, pickers, aprons, and Zero Waste buttons to help you feel prepared and official.
Tentative Volunteer Timeline: (7-10 volunteers are needed)
-
5:00 PM – Volunteers assist with bin setup and monitoring at primary gates
-
6:30 PM – Main shift begins; volunteers are stationed in one of five sections with 8–10 bin stations
-
During the event – Monitor bins, assist guests with sorting, remove contamination, and consolidate full bags
-
~11:00 PM – Tie off bags and stage compost and recycling for next-day pickup
Interested?
Email derek.kanwischer@mso.umt.edu to add your name to our volunteer list and/or ask questions. We’re still finalizing logistics with our events team, so some details (including the number of volunteers needed & our expected timeline) may shift accordingly.
Thanks for helping make campus events more sustainable. We couldn’t do it without you!

Zero Waste Pilot in Washington Grizzly Stadium
In the Fall of 2024, the Office of Sustainability tackled new zero-waste efforts in Washington-Grizzly Stadium. For the first time ever, zero waste stations (compost, recycling, and trash) were set up all across the stadium. Additionally, recycling and trash bins were set up at the gates and tailgate areas.
With the help of a team of student Zero Waste Ambassadors, we were able to transform the way materials are considered and managed within Griz Stadium.
We are excited about the prospect of improving upon our Zero Waste efforts within Griz Athletics. The success and positive response we have experienced with our Zero Waste football games demonstrate a strong demand for zero-waste infrastructure and a dedicated program to support these efforts. As we transition to future events we look forward to harnessing the capacity and shared interests of our partners in UM Athletics.

Concessions and Sustainability

All concessions during home football games are managed by UM Campus Dining. Concessions have mostly transitioned to using compostable single-use products. Additionally, the water available for purchase in the stadium is aluminum cans, eliminating plastic bottles from the stadium.
A key element of these efforts is the Farm-to-College (FTC) options at concessions stands, where sustainability meets local flavor. Some stands feature two signature burgers made from locally raised KOP beef, locally produced BBQ sauce, and cheese from a nearby creamery, as well as all-beef hotdogs from a Montana-owned processor. Each bite supports local farms and sustainable food systems.
