Mission
The Office of Sustainability at the 91次元 facilitates and supports a campus culture of environmental stewardship in keeping with our mission of inclusive prosperity and ‘resourceful stewardship of the land that sustains us.’ Working with partners across campus, we aim to improve our students’ literacy of sustainability issues and proactively develop policies and initiatives that bring us closer to that goal.
Values
People-Powered Change
We believe that change starts with individuals and grows through collective action.
- We empower students, staff, and faculty to lead sustainability projects and initiatives.
- Our programs are designed to uplift everyday champions and create ripple effects across campus.
- We recognize and celebrate the efforts of people making a difference at every level.
Collaboration
Sustainability is a team effort, and we are stronger when we work together.
- We partner with departments, students, and community organizations.
- We seek input and feedback early and often to co-create meaningful initiatives.
- We foster cross-disciplinary learning and planning.
Learning by Doing
We’re not afraid to try new things and learn from the results.
- We pilot programs, test ideas, and iterate based on what works.
- Students take an active role in designing, implementing, and evaluating sustainability efforts.
- Mistakes are part of the process. We value growth through experimentation.
Embedded in Place
Our work is rooted in the social, cultural, and environmental context of Missoula and Montana.
- We aim to make decisions that reflect the diverse values and realities of our local community.
- We consider land, people, and partnerships in all we do.
- We honor UM’s unique setting and its commitments to Indigenous communities and public service.
Accessible to All
We strive to make sustainability inclusive, welcoming, and doable for everyone.
- We share information in ways that are clear, friendly, and approachable.
- We offer opportunities for involvement that fit different schedules, interests, and experience levels.
- We work to reduce barriers, whether financial, physical, or social, so more people can take part.
Accountable
We commit to transparency, follow-through, and continual improvement.
- We track and report progress on campus sustainability goals.
- We’re honest about what’s working—and what isn’t.
- We invite feedback and adapt based on evolving needs and challenges.
