UM Summer

Course Options

Over the five weeks in the summer, students will complete one or two 3-credit online courses that fulfill a a UM general education requirement. 

All courses below are offered completely online and delivered asynchronously (self-paced) with no face-to-face interaction between instructors and students.

  • A survey of anthropology which introduces the fundamental concepts, methods and perspectives of the field. The description and analysis of human culture, its growth and change. The nature and functions of social institutions. Gen Ed Attributes: Historical Studies, Cultural & International Diversity

  • This is a survey course about bullshit. Why is it so easy to make and so hard to combat? What are the goals of those spreading it? Why are the tools that democratizing publishing the very weapons used to spread misinformation? How do we become better consumers and producers of information? Students will learn basic critical thinking and media literacy skills to help them become smart media consumers. Gen Ed Attributes: Democracy and Citizenship

  • Prereq., GRMN 101. Emphasis on oral communication, with continuing development in all major skill areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Gen Ed Attributes: Language Requirement 

  •  Prereq., SPNS 101. Continuation of SPNS 101. Gen Ed Attributes: Language Requirement 

  • The development of music listening skills. Exploration of the relationship between musical materials and the expressive qualities of a musical composition or performance. Concert attendance required. No musical background is expected. For non-majors only. Credit not allowed for both  and .Gen Ed Attributes: Literary & Artistic Studies

  • Constitutional principles, structures, and the political processes of the national government. Gen Ed Attributes: Social Sciences, Democracy and Citizenship

  • Surveys world art from prehistory through the present day with the objective of developing a critical understanding of art forms in their historical and cultural context. Gen Ed Attributes: Historical Studies, Cultural & International Diversity

  • A critical examination of crime in society: how crime is defined, the extent and distribution of crime, theoretical explanations of criminal behavior, and crime control efforts. Gen Ed Attributes: Social Sciences

  • Introduction to the scientific study of behavior in humans and other animals. Credit not allowed for both PSY 100S and PSYC 100S. Gen Ed Attributes: Social Sciences

  • Preparation, presentation, and criticism of speeches. Emphasis on the development of public speaking techniques through constructive criticism. Credit not allowed for both COMM 111A and COM 160A. Gen Ed Attributes: Expressive Arts

  • Overview of the principles and concepts used in the study of human social interaction, groups, communities and societies. Required of all majors. Gen Ed Attributes: Social Sciences

  • Restricted to Missoula College Pre-Health and Health Professions majors and Mountain Campus Pre-Pharmacy and Pre-Nursing students. Ethical decision-making tools for addressing common ethical issues in the health professions. Gen Ed Attributes: Ethical & Human Values

  • The determination of the level of national economic activity, inflation, economic instability, the role of money and financial institutions, and selected topics in public economic policy. Gen Ed Attributes: Social Sciences

  • Drug dependence and abuse. Gen Ed Attributes: Natural Science

The courses included in this program are standard UM courses and are taught at an accelerated pace for the summer session. If you are an IN-STATE student, these courses will appear on your UM transcript as "Dual Enrollment, Non-Degree." For both In-State and Out-of-State students, these credits WILL count towards the students' degree at UM and grade(s) from these course(s) will be included in their GPA.

Students’ participation in and engagement with the coursework is mandatory. Final letter grades will be awarded at the end of the course, which will impact the student’s college GPA. Students who are unable to meet time commitments must contact course professors immediately.
