All animals used in research must be ordered through LAR to ensure health status, traceability, and compliance with federal and institutional regulations.
How to Place an Order
- Complete the Animal Order Request Form
- Submit form to: kelly.carrick@mso.umt.edu
- Orders must be submitted by noon on Wednesdays, arrival is dependent on the vendor (see vendor information below)
-Orders arrive weekly. Orders forms must be submitted to the LAR Facility Manager by noon on Wednesday for arrival the following Wednesday.
-Orders forms must be submitted to the LAR Facility Manager by noon on the first and third Wednesday of each month for arrival the following Thursday.
(Formally Envingo)-Scheduled per truck delivery, usually the first Wednesday of each month. Delivery dates can vary. Please contact LAR Manager before completing an order form.

Non-Approved Vendors-please consult with the LAR Facility Manager, Attending Veterinarian or IACUC Manger for more information.
Important Notes
- LAR only orders from approved vendors (e.g., Jackson, Charles River)
- Allow 1–2 weeks for delivery, depending on vendor availability. Arrival time can take longer depending on species, special requests, and vendor.
- Animals will be housed in approved facilities upon arrival
- Special requests (e.g., age, strain, timed-pregnant) may require additional time or approval and/or arrival.
Receiving Animals
- Animals are inspected upon arrival by LAR staff
- Investigators will be notified when animals are ready for use
- Do not remove animals from quarantine or housing areas without permission

Animal Transfers

The IACUC and LAR supports Reduction by minimizing animal use without compromising scientific integrity. One option is animal reuse or transfer, but only when animal welfare is not compromised.
Animals may be reused or transferred if:
- They were only used in minimal pain/distress procedures (e.g., breeding, genotyping, non-survival surgery)
- They have not undergone procedures that alter normal physiology
- They were not exposed to biohazards or harmful chemicals
Animals cannot be reused if:
- They underwent major survival surgery or any invasive procedure that causes lasting effects
- They are USDA-covered animals used in multiple major survival surgeries
- They have medical conditions causing more than minimal distress =
Approval Process
Within the Same Protocol
- Must be described in the original IACUC protocol
- If not already included, submit an amendment for approval
Transfers Across Protocols
- Must be approved before the transfer
- Reviewed by the Attending Veterinarian (AV) or IACUC Manager
- May be referred to the full IACUC if needed
How to Request Transfer or Reuse
- Complete the Animal Transfer Form
- Submit to the AV, IACUC Manager, or LAR Facility Manager
- Approval will be granted within 24 hours
- Once approved:
- Update cage cards
- Receiving protocol will be updated with new animal numbers
Exceptions
- Retired breeders, unused animals, or surplus offspring may be transferred to approved protocols without additional review
- All transfers must still be documented and tracked
