60th Anniversary of MMUN

Did you know the Washington Monthly consistently ranks UM among the top universities for national service? The Montana Model United Nations High School Conference is one of the College of Humanities and Social Science’s many contributions to that distinction. Each fall, students in a political science service-learning course organize and staff the two-day event in collaboration with the Mansfield Center.
This year, 300 students from 14 Montana and Idaho high schools attended the 60th anniversary conference. Before the conference, high school students research the countries they will represent and write position papers on economic, military, environmental, and human rights issues. At the conference, they use parliamentary procedure to make speeches, develop working papers, and vote on resolutions. The conference is a leadership opportunity for students in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, twelve of whom go on to represent UM at an international collegiate conference in New York.
Many MMUN alumni, including conference founders Louise and Don Krumm, have careers in public policy, law, and international affairs. One of this year’s opening speakers, Channing Hartelius, served as secretary-general for the MMUN conference during the 1960’s, and has made his career as an attorney and businessman in Great Falls. The keynote speaker for the conference was Jason Bellini, a prominent journalist whose credits include the Wall Street Journal, CNN, and Scripps News.
