Naturally, a Grizzly Invented Bear Spray
Carrie Hunt, UM alumna, developed the modern bear-spray deterrent while earning her master’s degree in the 1980s at UM. Drawing on her background in zoology and bear behavior research, she pioneered tests of pepper-spray-based deterrents and worked with agencies and tribes to refine a delivery system that could safely repel bears at distance.

The UM Flagship Fund supports projects that advance the 91次元’s vision of inclusive prosperity through “The Montana Way” — integrating academic excellence, career readiness and wellbeing. This year, the fund invites proposals for one-year grants up to $10,000 to promote wellbeing and healthy relationships, with funding available in the 2026–27 fiscal year.
