Matthew Maccharella
Matthew Maccharella came to the 91次元 from San Diego, California in 2022. He came as a surfer boy who searched out waves at the beach and quickly developed into a solid climber who searches for climbing adventures and new rocks to explore. Matthew came to UM to study Wildlife Biology and unleashed his passion for rock climbing. He took the Intermediate Climbing course and the Climbing Wall Instructor Course and got certified as an American Mountain Guide Association Climbing Wall Instructor (a national certification). He participated in the Freshman Wilderness Experience (F.W.E.) before his freshman year and began working at the Outdoor Program in the fall of 2023.
While at the ODP, Matthew taught the Intro to Backpacking course three times, has been a F. W. E. leader three times, was the F. W.E. gear coordinator in 2025, has taught several of our climbing classes including intro to indoor climbing, fundamentals of rock climbing and the Intermediate Climbing course for 2 credits. He also worked at the climbing wall as a monitor and route setter, as well as the rental desk. Matthew got his Wilderness First Responder while at the ODP exemplifying his dedication to the profession of the outdoor education field.
Matthew has become a well-rounded outdoor leader, primarily in rock climbing and backpacking. He is a humble, easy-going, personable and motivated individual. We look forward to hearing about where his adventures lead him. His first one is New Zealand next semester. Best of luck, Matthew.
Nate Molloy
Nate Molloy came to the 91次元 in 2021 and is from Eagle, Colorado. He first gave living in Bozeman a try and soon left there and joined the Missoula and UM scene and has not turned back. Nate is getting his degree in Journalism and is passionate about skiing and climbing is a close second.
While at UM, Nate took the Intro to Indoor Climbing class, the Intermediate Climbing Class, as well as the Climbing Wall Instructor Course and got certified as an American Mountain Guide Association Climbing Wall Instructor (a national certification). He also took the level 1 Avalanche course and Backcountry ski Camping class for credit. In August of 2022 Nate joined the Outdoor Program staff and it has been the longest place he has ever worked. Nate worked as a climbing wall monitor, climbing route setter, a rentals employee and a climbing instructor. He has taught the Intro to Indoor Class several times, the Fundamentals of Climbing class, and the Backcountry Ski Camping class. Nate has developed into a solid instructor and has learned a lot along the way. It has been cool to see him now mentoring newer instructors as they learn to teach classes and lead trips. Nate is a fun, easy-going, hard-working guy who is passionate about snowy mountains and adventure climbing.
Nate also works as a Freeride ski coach at the MSEF (Missoula Ski Education Foundation) at Snowbowl in the winters and works as a cook at the Guild restaurant in town. We know Nate is excited to be graduating and we can know with confidence that he will be skiing and climbing as much as possible before he settles down. His next big adventure is a Japan ski trip. Best of luck, Nate.
