- Responding to all accommodation and modification requests in a timely manner.
By adopting University-wide , UM ensures its digital accessibility and usability of information technology.
New requirements starting in April of 2026
Beginning April 24, 2026, all web content must meet the WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standard under the updated ADA Title II rule. This means websites must be designed and maintained to be usable by people with a wide range of disabilities, including those who are blind, deaf, have limited mobility, or cognitive impairments. Key requirements include:
- Ensure all images have detailed alt text
- Maintaining sufficient color contrast
- Making content screen reader compatible
- Providing useful link text, avoiding 'click here'
- Avoid PDFs unless they are forms that are filled in and printed out
We are actively working to update all web content to meet these standards. If you would like your website reviewed or if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to webhelp@mso.umt.edu.
Why?
Accessible web content is part of UM's policy and a legal requirement for pages published by the University.
Please take a moment to read the Procedure for Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility on the UM Legal Counsel website.
Accessible content is not only required by University policy it is a competitive advantage in recruitment and search rankings. Accessible design increases search engine ranking, makes sites easier to navigate and increases compatibility with different web browsers and devices.
Accessible design, then, helps people with disabilities and improves the experience for all users.
