Faculty Focus: Dr. Blakely Brown
Dr. Blakely Brown is a Professor at UM in the School of Public and Community Health Sciences. She has been involved in collaborative research projects to decrease health disparities with Indigenous populations in Montana and New Zealand since 2002. Her work with the Rocky Boy and Crow Native American communities led to the first Memorandum of Understanding research agreement between the 91次元 and these tribal Nations in 2007. Dr. Brown is an ally and mentor for Native American students at UM, MSU and at several Montana Tribal Colleges and Universities. She helped co-design and implement a 2+2- B.S. public health degree program with Salish Kootenai College and UM. She is a co-Principal Investigator on the Sloan Indigenous Scholar Program that enhances the success of Native American graduate students in STEM and the Lead Evaluator for the National Native Children Trauma Center at UM. Her international community based participatory research (CBPR) projects with Maori, Pacific Islander and Samoan populations, and with Montana Native American populations focus on diabetes and obesity prevention, food access and security and food systems. Dr. Brown is an advocate for enhancing cultural humility and competence in non-Native researchers to work collaboratively and authentically with Indigenous populations on community-driven health projects.
