General Use Study Carrels
Study carrels on Level 2 are available to anyone with a Mansfield Library account (UM users and MT Borrowers) on a first-come, first-served basis. Level 2 study carrels include a chair, an overhead light, and a power outlet at the desk.
Keypad access study carrels are available for those with accessibility needs. Inquire at the Level 3 checkout desk to use one of these carrels.
Graduate Student Study Carrels
Fifteen study carrels on Level 1 and one accessible study carrel on Level 2 are available for graduate student use and are assigned on a per-semester basis (Fall Semester, Spring Semester and Summer session). Study carrels are checked out for one semester, and students must reapply each semester to be considered. If a student is assigned a carrel for two consecutive semesters, they must wait one semester before they are eligible to receive another assignment. All study carrels include a chair, an overhead light, and a power outlet at the desk and are only available during the Mansfield Library’s open hours. The application form opens the week before finals week each semester and closes for submissions one week prior to the start of the next semester. Students are selected at random by lottery and will be notified prior to the first day of classes.
Graduate study carrel applications are now open! Submit an application for Spring Semester 2025 now. The application window will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 9th, 2026.
Policy for the Assignment of Graduate Study Carrels:
- Study carrels can only be assigned to registered graduate students with an active NetID.
- Assignment of carrels will be facilitated through a lottery system.
- A completed application for a study carrel must be submitted to the Mansfield Library.
- A carrel holder may apply for another carrel at the end of their assigned period but will have no priority over other applicants and will have no guarantee that they will be assigned the same carrel.
- Applicants selected for study carrels will be notified by email of their carrel assignment.
- Carrels are not accessible when the library is closed. (Current library hours can be found here.)
Policy for the Use of Graduate Study Carrels:
- Users may keep library materials in carrels if they are checked out to the carrel user. (If they are not, these materials are essentially missing from the collection.)
- Please keep your volume level to a minimum. Library study carrels are not soundproof, and any conversation in your carrel can likely be heard in surrounding carrels. Speaker output is not allowed, and conversations should be kept quiet. Use of headphones is encouraged!
- The library’s patron conduct policy, including consumption of food and drink, applies within carrels. Heaters, coffee pots, kettles and other electrical/food preparation appliances are not allowed in carrels for safety reasons.
- Furniture should not be moved into, or removed from, the carrels.
- Windows must not be covered.
- Carrels should be locked at all times when not in use. Carrels are not a secure area—please do not store valuables in them! The Mansfield Library assumes no responsibility for the loss of, or damage to, personal possessions kept in carrels.
- Carrels must be cleared of all personal belongings and library materials when the carrel key is returned. Carrel keys must be returned by the assigned due date at the close of the semester.
