A Note on Generative AI in Our Databases

The Mansfield Library seeks to best serve UM’s students, staff, and faculty through specialized services, collections, instruction, and programs to nurture scholarship and creative activity. As the information landscape evolves, so does the technology used to navigate it.
Database vendors like and have begun incorporating Generative AI tools into their platforms. These AI tools are now active in select library databases. Users can identify databases with AI tools in , which includes details about the AI functionalities the user may encounter while accessing the database. Many vendors have not yet integrated AI into their offerings, while others—such as Web of Science—provide AI tools as paid services that the library has not subscribed to.
includes a new AI “research assistant” feature that can be accessed by clicking on the tab above the search box. This tool enables users to search academic content by asking questions using natural language and provides five recommended publications for each question searched.
AI-generated responses in OneSearch and library databases are limited to trusted, vetted content within those resources, reducing the likelihood of hallucinated information. Since these tools are still in early stages, users are encouraged to provide feedback on response quality using the thumbs up or thumbs down buttons available on the platform.
Many of the AI features must be deliberately selected, allowing users complete control over whether to use AI while using library resources. As the note, “The Research Assistant is not a replacement for human expertise.” We are always ready to answer your questions and help you track down exactly what you are looking for.
We welcome your feedback as we navigate the ever-changing landscape of AI and technology together.
TL;DR: Many library databases now include a generative AI search option. These tools are active in some databases but can be easily ignored by the user. AI tools will not affect normal database search results if not used. The library welcomes user feedback on AI tools in our databases.
