Dr. Kellenberg鈥檚 Work at the Nexus of Global Economics and Environment

Dr. Derek Kellenberg’s work primarily lies at the intersections of international trade, environmental policy, and global development. His research largely focuses on transboundary environmental challenges, including how differences in national regulations and international agreements influence cross-border pollution and the movement of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
In courses like International Trade, Communicating Economics, and ECNS 445: International Environmental Economics and Climate Change, Dr. Kellenberg challenges students to critically examine complex trade relationships between developed and developing nations and their environmental consequences. Through ECNS 445, students gain a comprehensive understanding of pressing global environmental challenges.
He is currently collaborating on a study investigating how fluctuations in global markets increase the risk of invasive pest species entering through agricultural imports—an issue with important implications for food security and ecosystem health. Dr. Kellenberg is also co-authoring a forthcoming National Academy of Sciences report that evaluates the current state of recycling and solid waste management in the United States and offers recommendations for their improvement.
