Plan Ahead for 2026: Health Insurance at Curry Health Center
Important: This change only applies to the medical clinic. Our counseling and dental clinics will continue operating on a fee-for-service model, supported by the student health fee to keep costs low.
The Montana University System has long required students to carry health insurance. This update aligns with that requirement and will make it easier for students to use the coverage they already have.
Students will still pay the student health service fee — included in registration each semester — which ensures access to our full range of health services and free wellbeing programs.
For medical clinic services, students will need active health insurance coverage. If your plan is not contracted with Curry Health Center, you may still receive care by paying out of pocket.
Billing: Now and in the Future
Currently, Curry Health Center’s services are supported through the health service fee (currently $303/semester), which provides on-campus students with access to health and free wellbeing support across campus. This fee is not health insurance and does not cover the cost of individual services; it simply ensures that you have access to essential medical, mental health, dental, and wellness resources.
Starting January 1, 2026, Curry Health Center’s medical clinic (not counseling or dental) will begin billing insurance for services. This means:
-
You’ll still pay the mandatory health service fee to access comprehensive health and wellbeing support
-
But you’ll also need active health insurance coverage — or be prepared to pay out of pocket — to receive care from the medical clinic
This change supports our ability to continue providing high-quality, student-centered care while expanding access to sustainable wellness services.
To be ready for this change, make sure you're covered by one of the following:
- A parent/guardian’s plan
- An employer’s plan
- A private insurance plan
- Or AcademicBlue, UM’s student health insurance plan (also called SHIP)
This change won’t affect services until January 2026, but it's important to be aware and watch for updates.
The Curry Health Center won’t turn any student away for care. But when it comes to billing:
- Currently, charges for students not enrolled in SHIP are added to your student account, and payment is your responsibility.
- If you're on a private, employer, or international plan, you may be able to file a self-claim to request reimbursement from the carrier.
Filing a Self-Claim (Before Jan. 2026)
If you’re not on SHIP and want to get reimbursed for care you received at Curry Health Center:
- Visit your insurance provider’s website or contact their customer service because deadlines vary by carrier.
- You can also email us at studentinsurance@mso.umt.edu (from your UM email) with your 790# and the type of insurance you’re using for step-by-step instructions.
Medicaid
- Curry Health Center is not a Medicaid provider and cannot bill Medicaid services nor will they reimburse the client.
- If you’re eligible, consider applying for Montana Medicaid or the HIPP program for additional support. If you haven’t done so already, contact the Student Insurance Advocate to apply for the HIPP program.
Purchased/Referred Care (PRC) through Indian Health Services (IHS)
We can submit claims to Purchased/Referred Care (PRC) on your behalf. Students should seek prior approval from PRC to be seen at Curry Health Center. Please let the receptionist know before your appointment.
