Applying to UM: What You Need to Know

First, a few things you should know:

  • No essays or letter of recommendation are required to apply
  • UM is ACT/SAT optional. You do not need test scores to apply.
  • UM practices "rolling admissions," which means we review applications as they come in, allowing you to submit your application within a wider time frame.
  • The application for fall 2025 opens July 1, 2024.

Choose Your Application Type

We offer two options to submit your application:

The Common App is a shared application that allows you to apply to multiple schools nationwide at the same time.

Apply Montana allows Montana residents to apply to multiple colleges in the state at once.

We don’t have a preference for which application you use, so pick the one that makes the most sense for you.

Admission Requirements

First things first – make sure you qualify to become a Grizzly. To be admitted to UM, applicants should meet on of the criteria below:

  • 2.5 GPA or higher, or
  • 22 ACT or higher, or
  • 1120 SAT or higher, or
  • Top 50% of graduating class

What Our Application Includes

Our application will take about 20 to 30 minutes. You’ll add information like your name and address, where you go to school and your graduation date. Your academic history is also required, with a few important sections to note:

  • Courses and Grades
You'll enter your high school courses and grades into the application, so keep your transcript handy.

  • Test Scores (Optional)
UM is test-optional, so if you took the ACT or SAT and want to submit your score, you can. If you didn't, no problem.

NOT REQUIRED: Personal essays or letters of recommendation are not required to apply.

Research and Choose Your Program

UM has hundreds of academic programs to choose from, whether you're interested in business, environmental science, fine arts, cybersecurity, or any other field. .

Not sure? No problem! Select “Undeclared” on the application. Once you’re on campus, we have several resources to help you Discover Your Major at UM.

Your Application Status Portal

After applying, you’ll retain access to your Application Status Portal. You can track your application status there and check for any updates requesting more materials (we’ll send you an email if we’re missing anything). If you applied through the Common App, we’ll send you an email prompt to create your personal application portal.

Patience You Must Have: Applications typically take two weeks to process.

Applying for Financial Aid

Sorting out how you will finance your education is integral to this process. Filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a prerequisite for accessing federal financial aid. UM also offers a scholarship portal that unlocks hundreds of financial aid opportunities with a single application.
