Western Undergraduate Exchange Tuition Discount
The (WUE) Tuition Discount is a highly competitive merit-based tuition discount, and the 91次元’s highest award for incoming students from WUE-eligible states.
How does WUE work?
- If selected for WUE, you will pay 150% of Montana resident tuition, representing a $21,808 savings from the typical non-resident tuition rate, making this our top award for non-resident applicants.
- We have a limited number of spaces for WUE students, so we select top eligible students from WUE states based on several factors. See the “Eligibility” section below for more details.
- Your application for admission serves as your WUE application. You can strengthen your WUE application by submitting supplementary material such as a letter of recommendation, senior-year grades, a personal statement, or more detailed explanations of your involvement outside of class.
- We will select WUE recipients several times throughout the year. WUE selection is a holistic process, including an academic evaluation (course performance, course rigor, test scores) and personal evaluation (involvement outside of the classroom, accolades and achievements, leadership and service).
- Students who apply by the December 1 Early Action deadline will be automatically considered; students who apply during the Regular Decision and Rolling Decision periods will be considered on a space-available basis.
- Transfer students will automatically receive the WUE tuition discount if they have a 3.5 GPA or higher in 12 or more transfer credits.
- WUE does not “stack” with other scholarships; if selected you are not eligible to receive other non-resident entering student scholarships.
Eligibility
- Students must be a resident of a WUE state (see the map below)
- First-year students must have at least a 3.0 weighted high school GPA to be eligible for consideration

- A student’s academic major will not affect eligibility.

Reconsideration
If you want to be at UM, we want to do our best to make it possible. Our financial aid appeal process allows admitted students to ask for a re-evaluation of their merit-based financial aid for a variety of reasons:
- Improved GPA
- Strong extracurricular involvement
- Life events that affected academic performance
- Competing offers
- Special financial circumstances (requires documentation)
While we cannot guarantee that we can increase aid for anyone, we review every request and do our best to make UM a reality.
